Prof. Valerie Corfield recognized at 2012 NSTF- BHP Billiton Awards

Prof. Valerie Corfield, Vice-Chairperson of the Western Cape Branch of SA WISE, was acknowledged for an outstanding contribution to science, engineering, technology and innovation (SETI) at the 14th NSTF-BHP Billiton Awards gala dinner held in Gauteng on 21 June 2012. Twelve awards were presented by the Honourable Minister of Science and Technology, Ms Naledi Pandor. Professor Valerie A Corfield, who produced a package of innovative SETI-based public engagement activities, was recognized in the category for outstanding contributions to SETI through Science Communication for Public Awareness over the last 5 years. The awards were sponsored by the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA).

 

 

Grade 10 Learner scoops 2nd prize at the Intel ISEF

Sasha Holloway, a grade 10 learner at Springfield High School was recently selected to represent South Africa a the prestigious Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Pittsburgh, USA. She competed with over 1500 students from over 68 different countries and was awarded second place in her category (Animal Science) and will now have a minor planet named after as part of her prize. Her project was title “A study of the endogenous activity rhythms of the marine isopod Exosphaeroma truncatitelson”. Sasha is a great role model for other female scientists at school level – she has shown how far one can go with a bit of hard work and lots of passion.
