Henriette Ngako

Born in a Tswana village near Rustenburg in 1943, she was taught to make pots by her grandmother. Since 1985 she has worked in the Pretoria studio of the potter Tineke Meijer who taught her the techniques of sculpture. She lives in Hammanskraal.

Her work is constructed in the form of totems that she paints with oxides and colour slips, the surfaces are then sgraffitoed to create figurative imagery which echoes the modelled forms. These are fired in an electric kiln to 1080 degrees.
