Born in Lesotho in 1958 and later orphaned, Ghesa was raised by her granmother, a traditional potter. In 1990 she arrived at the Ardmore Ceramic Art Studio where Fee Halsted-Berning taught her the basic techniques.
With an aptitude for sculpture, she coils her forms using a terracotta body. These are fired to 1200 degrees before being finished in a variety of media, from oil paint to boot polish. Combining animal and human forms, her work blends the legends of her Sotho childhood with a highly personalised mythology.
In 1990 she won the National Regional Sculpture Prize and in 1993 the Natal Biennial Merit Award. She has exhibited widely, including as guest artist at the 1997 SA National Ceramic Exhibition.
Among her awards:
1990 Natal Regional Sculpture Prize
1993 Natal Biennial Merit Award
