Arts Exchange presents
9th ANNUAL URBAN VOICES POETRY AND THEATRE FESTIVAL
27 and 28 October (Concert Hall)
Urban Voices Poetry Festival

Urban Voices never fails, always inspiring, entertaining and thought-provoking. This year's festival features Tony Award-winning poet Lemon Andersen (New York), Patricia Smith (New York) and various other international and home-grown poets.
Patricia Smith is a powerful poet and academic who has received several international literary awards for her published works. She has enormous strength and depth both on stage and on the page. A four-time individual champion on the National Poetry Slam – the most successful slammer in the competition’s history – Smith has also been a featured poet on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam and has performed three one-woman plays, one produced by Nobel Prizewinner Derek Walcott. 'Reading poems like these, overflowing with life but contained by art, makes us all feel a little bit helpless. These poems are blessings that will move like white light through your veins.' – American Book Review on Patricia Smith.

Urban Voices Theatre Festival

Lemon Andersen returns to the Urban Voices stage, after his debut SA performance in 2006, in his critically acclaimed one-man theatre show County of Kings, produced by Spike Lee and the Culture Project. County of Kings is a jarring and poignant coming-of-age memoir told in a unique voice that seamlessly flows from compelling prose to hard-edged poetry without skipping a beat. This play is a true narrative of a life experience which is difficult and yet at times humorous. Andersen is a major poet and actor who has featured in several movies, including several Spike Lee movies such as She Hate Me, as well as appearing alongside Denzel Washington in Inside Man. He is an original cast member of Russell Simmons' Def Poetry Jam on Broadway.
'In a masterful blend of verse, rap and dialogue, Andersen paints a highly original portrait of his beloved urban wonderland' – Associated Press
