SHIRLEY VALENTYN

31 Januarie – 18 Februarie (Golden Arrow Studio)
Skrywer: Willy Russell
Vertaling en regie: Hennie van Greunen
Stelontwerp: Kosie Smit
'Shirley Valentyn ... is one of the finest productions I have ever seen.' Clinton Marius in Artsmart
'The fusion of Van Greunen's delicate direction and Surtie-Richards' superb understanding of the conflicted world of her character is a marriage made in theatre-heaven.' Daniel Derckson, The Writing Studio
'Dit is min dat 'n mens Surtie-Richards in só 'n nommerpas rol beleef met 'n vertolking wat 'n mens vir 'n tweede keer na die kaartjieskantoor wil laat hardloop.' Kobus Burger, Beeld
'[Shirley Valentyn] werk soos 'n bom, 'n bom wat Shaleen Surtie-Richards met haar uitmuntende karakterisering laat ontplof.' Elretha Britz, Volksblad
'It's a magical play that reaches its target audience through humour, draws them in and silences them with pathos…' Diane de Beer, Pretoria News
'Bekoorlike Shirley Valentyn lééf in Afrikaans.' Mariana Malan, Die Burger

SOMEWHERE ON THE BORDER

22 February – 17 March (Flipside)
Written by Anthony Akerman
Directed by André Odendaal
With Glen Biderman-Pam, Charles Bouguenon, Dylan Horley, Luan Jacobs, André Lötter, Kaz McFadden, Ndino Ndilula
Written in exile, intercepted in the post and banned as a publication by apartheid censorship because the language was considered "offensive" and the portrayal of the South African armed forces "prejudicial to the safety of the state", Anthony Akerman’s Somewhere on the Border was hailed by the Argus as "the toast of the Grahamstown Festival" when it opened in 1986. Exactly 25 years after the play was first performed in Grahamstown, André Odendaal’s production opened at the 2011 National Arts Festival. Leon van Nierop concluded his review on Artslink by saying, "the play performs an open heart surgery on the South African psyche. It is timely, finely acted and forcefully directed. See it at all costs."

DID WE DANCE
UKUTSHONA KO MENDI / THE SINKING OF THE MENDI

23 February – 10 March (Golden Arrow Studio)
Written by Lara Foot

Did We Dance, written by Lara Foot and narrated through African elements, sounds and movements, tells the epic story of men trapped on the Mendi as it sank during World War 1 in 1917.
Directed by the Steve Biko Foundation's artistic director and internationally acclaimed theatre director and storyteller Mandla Mbothwe, the play has cast a talented group of performers from across South Africa to create moments from our history that speak of the bravery of these men. A remarkable cast of 8 talented actors brings this 100-year-old fateful event back to vivid life. The script is based on the book Black Valour by Norman Clothier, and the production was first presented in King William's Town, in the heartland of the Eastern Cape, to critical acclaim.
