Welcome to The Department of Zoology Home Page!

<hr

The Department of Zoology specialises in marine biology and, particularly, the ecology of sandy beaches (Professor A C Brown), the ecology of rocky shores (Professor G M Branch, Associate Professor C.L. Griffiths), and the ecology of the upwelling zone off the Cape West Coast (Professor .G. Field). The Marine Biological Research Institute within the Department of Zoology (Director: Associate Professor C.L.Griffiths) was established in 1985 to co-ordinate and stimulate all aspects of marine biological research at the University of Cape Town. The Coastal Ecology Unit (Director: Professor G.M.Branch) was created in 1991 and is concerned with coastal ecology and managment. In addition, the study of the ethology, physiology and ecology of terrestrial vertebrates, particularly desert animals and mole-rats, is being pursued (Associate Professor J.U.M.Jarvis). Freshwater biology or limnology (Associate Professor B.R.Davies, Dr J.A.Day) is well developed through the Freshwater Research Unit, with particular emphasis on the ecological functioning of rivers, wetlands and coastal lakes. Professor G.Gade specialises in the biochemistry of insect neurpeptides and anaerobic metabolism.

The Department also includes the Percy Fitzpatrick Institute of African Ornithology (Director : Professor W.R. Siegfried). which is involved in a wide range of research topics on avian biology.
