Theo Stewart is
Emeritus Professor, having been Professor during 1984-2008, including
a period as Head of Department from 1994-1999. Previously, he had
worked at the National Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences
of the CSIR, where his final position was Director and Head of
Operations Research and Statistics. He had earlier industrial
experience as a chemical engineer with the Corner House and Sentrachem groups (1964-1971).
His
interests are in operational research and decision science, with
strong emphasis on multicriteria and multiobjective planning and decision
problems. He has applied these
concepts in a wide range of problem contexts in natural resources and
environmental planning and decision making

After
initially graduating with a BSc(Chemical
Engineering) at UCT, he continued part-time studies in operations
research and statistics through UNISA, completing the MSc(OR) in 1973,
and a PhD in Mathematical Statistics ("Bayes optimal
experimental design for determination of a response surface
maximum") in 1976.
Theo
Stewart is past-president and fellow of both the Operations Research
Society of South Africa (ORSSA) and the South African Statistical
Association (SASA). He was Vice President of IFORS (International
Federation of Operational Research Societies) for the period 2004-2006, and President of the International
Society on Multiple Criteria Decision Making for the period 2004-2008.
He serves on the editorial boards of number of journals, and is
currently Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Multi-Criteria Decision
Analysis, and African Editor of International Transactions in
Operational Research.
He
is a Life Fellow of the University of Cape Town, member of the Academy
of Science of South Africa and a Fellow of the Royal Society of South
Africa. In 2008 he was awarded the gold medal of the
International Society on Multiple Criteria Decision Making (for marked
contributions to theory, methodology and practice in the field), and
has been awarded ORSSA's Tom Roszwadowski
Medal (for writtten contributions to OR) on
five occasions.
Selected publications
Theo Stewart collaborated
with Valerie Belton (University of Strathclyde, Glasgow) in authoring a
book on Multiple Criteria Decision Making: An Integrated Approach
(published by Kluwer Academic Publishers in 2002). He has also
co-edited three further books, namely Trends in Multicriteria
Decision Making (T. J. Stewart and R. C. van den Honert, Editors; Springer, Berlin, 1998); Multicriteria Decision Making: Advances
in MCDM Models, Algorithms, Theory, and Applications ( T. Gal, T.
J. Stewart and T. Hanne, Editors; Kluwer Academic Publishers, Boston,
1999); and Multiple Criteria Decision Making for Sustainable Energy and
Transportation Systems (M. Ehrgott, B. Naujoks, T.J. Stewart and J Wallenius,
Editors; Springer, 2010).
