The Sichel Medal is awarded annually by the South African Statistical Association for the best paper published in the previous year in a peer-reviewed journal and authored or co-authored by one or more of their members. The medal was instituted in  1997 in memory of Professor Herbert Sichel, a  Professor at WITS and one of the doyens of South African Statistics.

The winners this year, 2009,  were Legesse Debusho from the University of Pretoria and Linda Haines from UCT for their paper entitled "V- and D-optimal population designs for the simple linear regression model with a random intercept term'' which was published in the Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference in 2008, Volume 138, pages 1116-–1130.   Much of the work for the paper was completed at UKZN while Legesse was a PhD student under Linda's supervision. The consolidation and write up of the study was done here at UCT where Linda is a staff member and at the University of Limpopo and later at the Pretoria University where Legesse is a staff member.
