Qualifications and Experience
Sugnet Lubbe obtained the degrees BComm
(Mathematics), Hons BComm (Mathematical Statistics), MComm (Mathematical
Statistics) and PhD at Stellenbosch
University between
1994 and 2001. From 1997 to 2009 Sugnet was working full time in industry
as researcher statistician and later senior statistician for a large
multi-national corporate. During this time Sugnet never ceased to do
research and a formal research partnership with Stellenbosch
University resulted
in 30 publications and 45 conference presentations. Since 2006 Sugnet has
been co-supervisor for four Masters students and are currently
co-supervisor for a PhD student at Stellenbosch
University. Sugnet
joined UCT as full time academic in July 2009.
Current Research / Research Interests
Sugnet’s research interests are primarily in the
field of multivariate statistics such as discrimination and classification,
cluster analysis, correspondence analysis and multidimensional scaling. Her
focus is on producing graphical displays, biplots, to accompany the
multivariate analyses. Apart from the theoretical development of biplot
methodology she enjoys applying the techniques in a wide variety of
practical applications. Sugnet has close research relationships with Prof
NJ le Roux from Stellenbosch University
and Prof JC Gower from The Open University, UK,
which culminated in a book “Understanding Biplots” to be published soon by
John Wiley & Sons.
