Qualifications and Experience

Lida completed an MSc in Mathematics: "On certain generalisations of Bellman integral inequalities" at the University in Katowitz, Poland. She then worked as a researcher at the Centre of Science and Technology at the Polish State Railway.
During this time she was involved in building the software for various numerical calculations and statistics problems of railway traffic engineering. She also worked individually and as part of a team on many projects.
After emigrating to South Africa she was a part-time lecturer in the Mathematics Department and the Department of Statistical Sciencs at UCT.
From the beginning of 2003 she was appointed as a full-time lecturer in the Department of Statistical Sciences.

Lida is the course convenor for STA1001F, STA1001S and STA1001H

 

Research Interests

Mathematics and Statistic Education.

  • Links between dropout rate of incoming students into STA1001 course and their earlier algebraic skills.

  • Developing Special Intervention Program to support students with identified needs.

  • Adapting the monitored workshop mode to plan for changed needs associated with any mathematical literacy challenges associated with changes in the school-leaving curriculum.

Work in Progress

Challenges in identifying and rectifying algebra misconceptions and gaps exhibited by the 1st year students registered for the STA1001 course at the University of Cape Town.
