Qualifications and Experience

Alison Joubert is a Chief Scientific Officer in the Department. Her current main project is the European Commission funded project, "TRANSMAP" which concerns methods for designing transboundary marine protected areas. Other recent projects included (i) government monitoring and evaluation and multi-criteria analysis (funded by CAGE), (ii) the development of a National Water Resource Classification System (funded by DWAF) and (iii) Poverty Reduction and Environmental Management (funded by the Dutch government). She has been involved in several Water Research Commission funded projects, including the most recent: "Guidelines for the use of multicriteria decision analysis in the implementation of the National Water Act".

Previously she work in the Freshwater Research Unit as a researcher (Zoology Dept. UCT) grouping South African rivers by daily, flow-derived variables, and as a teacher in Khayalitsha and Namibia.

Alison obtained a BSc in Zoology in 1983 at UCT, and a BSc (Hons) (first class pass) in Biological Resource Management at UCT in 1994 (Stock assessment and exploration of alternative harvesting strategies for the west coast rock lobster (Jasus lalandii) resource, based on a surplus production modelling approach).

She obtained her PhD in 2003 ("Multi-Attribute Value Measurement and Economic Paradigms in Environmental Decision Making.")

Research Interests

Her research interests include the development of user-friendly approaches to multi-criteria decision making in natural resource management and the comparison of these and other methods with environmental economics tools.
