About 60 people were up bright and early to attend
the "Seabird and Shorebird Breakfast"
hosted by the Avian Demography Unit at 0730 on Monday morning, 20 May.
Here,

SAFRING Ringing Coordinator,
chats to Robert Llewyllan-Smith,
Earthwatch Europe.
Robert was in Cape Town visiting the South African Penguins
Earthwatch Project on
Robben Island. Earthwatch Europe is the ADU's
parter in a Darwin Initiative grant from the UK Government.

in a few weeks time, networking cheerfully with Mario Leshoro,
Environmental Officer for the
Robben Island Museum.
The ADU is deeply grateful to Mario for all his assistance on the island
in a variety of ways.

The ADU undertook to donate
part of the profits on
The Adventures of Peter the Penguin
to SANCCOB. The book describes the life of Peter, the
famous penguin which was satellite tracked from Port Elizabeth back
to Robben Island during the
Treasure oil spill of June 2000.
It is described as a book for "childen of all ages".
It is now a year since the book was published, and

and PhD student within the ADU, presents a cheque to Alan Jardine,
representing SANCCOB.

Finally, we presented Marine and Coastal Management, Department
of Environmental Affairs, with the ADU's
"Partner of the Year Award". The citation reads: Marine and Coastal
Management, especially through the "seabird team" led by
Dr Rob Crawford,
provide enormous support to the Avian Demography Unit. They partner
us in a range of projects, assist staff and students with transport and access
to islands, provide co-supervision for postgraduate students, and
invited us to participate in the Prince Edward Islands
Millennium Expedition in December 2001.

Judging from the noise that emanated from the "Map Room", where the
breakfast was held, lots of networking took place. Our wish is that
the networking was not
only of the fragile variety, but that it will also be ...

... strong and enduring. We plan to have our next "seabird event" in about
August.
