Hamburg, 13-19 August 2006

Doug Harebottle

Four intrepid ADUers (Les Underhill, Dieter Oschadleus, Doug Harebottle and Res Altwegg) travelled to Hamburg to attend the 24th International Ornithological Congress. Over 1500 delegates attended the conference which had up to nine parallel sessions in the morning and afternoon.

We all stayed at different hotels in Hamburg. This is Hotel Baseler Hof on the Esplanade where many delegates were accommodated, including Doug.

The conference was held at the CCH Conference Centre, a multi-floor centre with excellent conference facilities.

The opening ceremony was held in one of the many Halls in the CCH. These rooms can probably accommodate more than 1500 people!

Dammtor railway station, situated within 5 min walking distance from the CCH. Most delegates enjoyed lunch at one of the many, and more economical, fast-food outlets located in the station building.

The Thursday was excursion day. Doug's trip took him to Wismar Bay on the Baltic Sea coast.

To get to the island one had to walk across a small channel. Water depth is driven by wind tides as the Baltic Sea is not driven by oceanic tides.

They do a fair amount of bird trapping on the island. While we were there a female Common Kestrel was caught in a modified aerial clap trap.

The house on the island where the warden lives. Wardens are volunteer workers and are rotated every 4-5 weeks during the summer months. The house is uninhabitated during the winter.

After lunch, we were given a rundown of the work that is carried out on the island by the current warden (he is seated near the telescope).

Wader trapping and ringing forms an integral part of the bird monitoring on the island. Here is one of the walk-in traps used to catch Ruddy Turnstones, Little Stint, Curlews, etc.

The Old Botanical Garden was situated just opposite from the CCH and many delegates used the lunch break to walk around the garden.

There were many exhibitors at the IOC. One stand was dedictaed to displaying some of Germany's birdlife with mounted specimens....what would a trip to Germany be without a picture of a White Stork on a nest!

Doug took a harbour tour on the Sunday morning before flying back. This trip takes visitors through the old harbour and some of the older parts of Hamburg.

The train system consists of both surface and underground systems. IOC delegates were allowed to travel free of charge on all public transport for the duration of the conference.

Overall it was a good congress...with smiles all round....especially as Les was elected as Vice-President of the IOC Committee (congrats Les!).

We look forward to 2010 when the 25th IOC will take place in Brazil. This will be the first time that the congress will have been hosted by a South American country!.
