This is the centre of Cape Town, popularly known as the "City Bowl": Devil's Peak is on the left, Table Mountain is behind the city, with the Twelve Apostles stretching off to the right behind it, and Lion's Head and Signal Hill lie to the right of the city

Sea Point

Table Bay and the port of Cape Town, with the Central Business District just inland. The suburb in the foreground is Sea Point, with Signal Hill behind it. The Cape Flats stretches out into the distance, and False Bay is just visible near the top right hand corner

Clifton

Sea Point continues in the bottom left hand corner. The beach below Lion's Head is Clifton, followed by the long curved sandy beach at Camps Bay. The view of Table Mountain is end on, with Devil's Peak beyond the City Bowl to the left of Table Mountain. In the background is False Bay, with the mountains leading to Cape Hangklip visible

Llandudno

Further to the south is the village of Llandudno

Hout Bay
Photo L.G. Underhill
Llandudno is in the foreground, and the bay coming in from the right is Hout Bay. Little Lion's Head lies between them. The mountain behind Hout Bay is Constantiaberg, and southern end of the Cape Peninsula stretches off into the distance

Looking northward. The rugged stretch of coast in the foreground is between Hout Bay and Llandudno. The valley on the right is the Hout Bay valley. Lion's Head is on the left, and the view of Table Mountain is the unusual view from behind

Scarborough

The southernmost village along the west coast of the Cape Peninsula is Scarborough. Farther south is the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, now part of the Cape Peninsula National Park

Simonstown
Photo L.G. Underhill
On the east side of the Cape Peninsula is the naval harbour at Simonstown. Cape Point is in the far distance. Glencairn is in the foreground

Devils Peak

Devil's Peak. The two clusters of large buildings are Groote Schuur Hospital in the foreground, where the world's first heart transplant was performed, with the University of Cape Town beyond the large green grassy area. The "southern suburbs" of Cape Town stretch off into the distance

Robben Island
Photo L.G. Underhill
Robben Island, once the unvisitable prison of Nelson Mandela, now a World Heritage Site. The Robben Island Museum welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors per year.

All these pictures were taken from scheduled KLM flights, either on arrival or departure from Cape Town. Weather permitting, KLM does a grand tour of the Cape Peninsula on its daily flights between Amsterdam and Cape Town. Staff of the Avian Demography Unit fly KLM preferentially whenever feasible. We make our bookings with Penny le Mesurier at Harvey World Travel Rondebosch Village (formerly Titch Travel)
