ADU travels, expeditions and eventsFamily launch of the new offices of the Avian Demography UnitHaving moved during January, Wednesday 6 March 2002 saw us settled enough to have the "family celebration" to launch the new offices of the Avian Demography Unit. The only people invited this time were staff plus their husbands, wives, partners, sons and daughters. The "official opening" will take place in a few weeks time. The "Map Room" proved large enough to accommodate 50 people with space to spare. We took the opportunity to congratulate Phil Whittington in person on submitting his PhD for examination in the previous few days. We did the same in absentia for Lorenzo Serra, who is based in Bologna, Italy.
The offices for the Avian Demography Unit remain in the PD Hahn Building on the Upper Campus of the University of Cape Town. We are just a couple of floors lower down in the building than before, in the space that used to be occupied by the Department of Psychology. The university spent several million rand giving this space a total revamp, and it is generally agreed that the move has made a world of difference to us. Everyone now have a window that we can actually see out of! The ADU is part of the Department of Statistical Sciences; this is now a physical reality, with most of the statisticians have moved into the floor above us and an overflow sharing our level. We are grateful to the University of Cape Town for the provision of the new offices for the Avian Demography Unit. |
