Qualifications and experience
Donella completed her B Sc degree majoring in Zoology and Microbiology/Plant Pathology at Pietermaritzburg University
in 1974. She then moved to the University of Cape Town for an Honours degree in Zoology and Higher Diploma in Education.
After teaching Biology for a year at Ixopo High School she returned to UCT to do her M Sc in Zoology (Fluctuations
in populations and habitat use within a changing environment), spending many hours at Rondevlei Bird Sanctuary.
After another year of teaching Biology at Pinelands High School, Donella was at home supporting her husband in Parish
ministry and caring for three children until 1994, when she started working part-time as a Research Assistant in the
Zoology Department at UCT. In October 1997 she started coordinating the Coordinated Avifaunal Roadcounts (CAR) Project
at the ADU, also part-time. These roadcounts of many threatened species are conducted by farmers, bird club members,
nature conservationists and some schools. Having grown up in the country with an interest in conservation ecology and
birds, Donella particularly enjoys the contact with people who share this interest in gathering information about large
birds on farms.
