Candice Lakay Candice Lakay
Data capturer

Candice completed a National Resource Guardianship certificate in March 2005. This was obtained in completion of a National Youth Service Programme in conjunction with the Cape Nature and Umsumbomvu Youth Fund. It was focussed on skills development whilst locating these within the context of the world of work. The Youth Service Programme engages youth in a process of providing a valued and necessary service to the community in which we live, while at the same time increasing their skills, education and opportunities. The Youth Service Programme has a strong focus on experiental service learning, whereby SETA accredited training is also received where possible. Cape Nature plays a big and important role in this programme, by providing exposure in the specific areas of training directly from the necessary departments of Cape Nature. Training took place at different Nature reserves and was provided by staff members, and participants would deliver services (working with staff doing field work) on the reserves, and this would be part of the practical training in order to acquire that specific skill. After a year on this programme, Candice graduated and is now a qualified Field Ranger.

Candice is currently working at the ADU as a data technician for SABIF (South African Biodiversity Information Facility). She started at the ADU in the begining of May 2005, capturing data for SAFRING (South African Bird Ringing Unit) and she has moved on to SARCA's (South African Reptile Conservation Assessment) data capturing which is also funded by SABIF.
