Born in Canary Islands (Spain) in 1974, since very early she was involved in outdoors activities. Her love for the sea and the mountains found an ally in her studies of Biology at University of La Laguna (Spain). She graduated in 1998 with a specialisation in Zoology. After joining a local environmental education company, she worked with children and adults organising environmental routes, workshops and activities. Shortly afterwards she was contracted as an environmental consultant for a 2-year EU project in the Republic of Cape Verde (“Cabo Verde Natura 2000”). Being this her first opportunity working in Africa, she faced new challenges and difficulties like learning new languages and the loops of local politics. However, the experience was extraordinaire due to the Archipelago’s marvellous nature and the kindness of its peoples. Challenged with the contradictions and difficulties of making conservation decisions in the real arena, she decided to join the Conservation Biology Programme of the FitzPatrick Institute at the University of Cape Town. Currently she is initiating her PhD in the Avian Demography Unit (UCT). She will be looking at the feeding ecology, predation, migration, population genetics and conservation status of the Great White Pelican in Southern Africa.Research interests I have a profound and deep interest in understanding why the world is like it is. And this includes the wonders of nature as well as the more mundane, but still diverse, human aspects. Travelling is my passion, and being able to live or to work in pristine natural regions is very energising. But also I would like to make my contribution to perpetuate that world that I admire so much for my children’s -and the children of my children’s- enjoyment. |
