SAFRING projects

  • Barn Swallows
  • Barn Swallows are the most ringed birds in southern Africa. Currently they are being ringed at several roost sites in the following areas:

    Bloemfontein Bloemfontein Swallow project

    Roodepoort

    Middleburg, Mpumulanga

    Near Stellenbosch

  • Redbilled Quelea

This pest species is the second most ringed bird in southern Africa. It is ringed periodically when government funds are provided.

  • Birds with engraved rings:
  • Engraved rings are coloured plastic rings with unique letters engraved on them in a different colour. The following are some species that have been given engraved rings:

Hartlaub's Gull - Western Cape Ringwatch

Swift Tern - Western Cape Janine

African Black Oystercatcher - SA coast OCP

    Seabirds - Western Cape MCM

    Pale Chanting Goshawk

There are also many colour ringing projects, too numerous to list them all, from Blue Cranes to Olive Thrushes. When you see a bird with a colour or engraved ring, please report all relevant details to SAFRING. See here for the details required. If the coordinators of the project can be tracked down, SAFRING will be forward the sighting to them, and provide feedback to the reporter.
