Coursers and Pratincoles (Family Glareolidae)

A ringing history of Coursers and Pratincoles in southern Africa, 1948-2001

There are 8 Cursor species worldwide, of which 5 occur in southern Africa. There are 7 species in the genus Glareola, of which 3 occur in southern Africa.

Relatively few Coursers and Pratincoles have been ringed in southern Africa. Capture has probably been with mistnets, although a few nestlings have been ringed. Few have been recovered or recaptured.

Individual species ringing histories

276 Burchell's Courser Cursorius rufus

A total of 15 birds have been ringed in southern Africa. Five untraced records date between 1963 and 1974. Five nestlings and 2 juveniles were ringed in Namibia between May 1984 and March 1986. These were ringed by Mr R Braby in different localities in the Skeleton Coast. Three unaged birds were ringed at Benfontein farm, Free State on 28 April 1996 by Mr DJ Van Niekerk.

279 Threebanded Courser Rhinoptilus cinctus

A total of 51 birds have been ringed in southern Africa. 37 untraced records date between 1966 and 1974. Two adults were ringed on the Zambesi River (Zimbabwe) on 16 August 1981 by Mr T Tree. Twelve adults were ringed by Mr H Meevis between December 2000 and May 2001 in the Lesoma Valley in Botswana. Mass of 14 adults: 119.5 - 144.7 - 159 g. Winglength of 12 adults: 163 - 168.8 - 175 mm.
