Lapwings Vanellus plovers

A ringing history of Vanellus plovers in southern Africa, 1948-2001

There are 24 species in the genus Vanellus worldwide, of which 7 occur in southern Africa.

Relatively few Vanellus plovers have been ringed in southern Africa, except higher numbers of Crowned and Blacksmith. Capture has probably usually been with mistnets, and nest traps, and a few nestlings have been ringed. Some have been recovered or recaptured.

Individual species ringing histories

244 Lesser Blackwinged Plover Vanellus lugubris

A total of 18 birds have been ringed in southern Africa. Three were ringed in the period 1961-63: these records have not been traced. 15 adults were ringed (and colour-ringed) by David Ward in September 1985 in Ndumu Game Reserve, KwaZulu-Natal (Ward 1989). Mass of these 15 birds was 109-121.6-140 g. None have been recovered.

248 Longtoed Plover Vanellus crassirostris

A total of 10 birds have been ringed in southern Africa.
