Bustards and Korhaans

A ringing history of Bustards and Korhaans in southern Africa, 1948-2001

The Bustards and Korhaans, family Otididae, comprise 22 species in 8 genera. Eleven species have been recorded in southern Africa.

Ringing totals and capture methods

Bustards and Korhaans are large terrestrial birds, so very few have been ringed, with numbers ringed varying from 0 to 98. Mainly adults have been ringed; presumably chicks are not easily found. Adults may be trapped using a torch and handnet at night (Geyser 2000).

Few Bustards and Korhaans have been recovered or resighted/recaptured.

Individual species ringing histories

218 Ludwig's Bustard Neotis ludwigii

Uncommon, found in drier parts of southern Africa. None have been ringed.

219 Stanley's Bustard (Denham's Bustard) Neotis denhami

One bird, an adult male of mass 3400g, was ringed (985652) on 05/04/1994 in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, by Albert Schultz.

220 Karoo Korhaan Eupodotis vigorsii

1 ringed in 1969, and 16 in 1977, but these records have not been traced in our files yet.

222 Whitebellied Korhaan Eupodotis cafra

Uncommon, found in grassland areas of Africa. None have been ringed.

223 Blue Korhaan Eupodotis caerulescens

2 ringed in 1964, 2 in 1966, and 2 in 1967, but these records have not been traced in our files yet.

225 Black Korhaan Eupodotis afra

Originally Black Korhaan included Whitewinged Black Korhaan and ringers recorded this as Black Korhaan. Based on distribution all these records refer to Whitewinged Black Korhaan and have thus been changed to that species number. No Southern Black Korhaans have been ringed.

227 Blackbellied Korhaan Eupodotis melanogaster

4 adults were ringed by Dave Johnson (ring numbers 804271, 804273, 960308, 960315), between 1986 and 1995. 3 were ringed in Mkuze Game Reserve, and one in Itala Nature Reserve, both reserves being in KwaZulu-Natal.
