Hamerkop (Family Scopidae) and Storks (Family Ciconiidae)

A ringing history of Hamerkop and Storks in southern Africa, 1948-2002

There is one species in the Hamerkop family. There are 17 stork species with 8 species in southern Africa.

Ringing totals and capture methods

The Hamerkop and Storks are large terrestrial birds, so very few have been ringed, with numbers ringed varying from 0 to 114. Mainly nestlings and some rehabilitatees have been ringed; adults are not easily caught.

Few Hamerkop and Storks have been recovered or resighted/recaptured, except for the White Stork where large numbers have been ringed in Europe, resulting in many recoveries in southern Africa.
