Projects of the Avian Demography UnitMozambique Bird Atlas ProjectAnnual Report 2003The Atlas of the Birds of Central Mozambique The field survey of central Mozambique (initiated in 1999) was completed. All the available data for the region was checked and edited. The final draft of the manuscript for ‘the Atlas of the Birds of Central Mozambique’ was submitted to the Avian Demography Unit for publication. The following items which are to be included in the publication are still outstanding: Bird Survey of the Niassa Game Reserve The field survey of northern Mozambique got underway with a survey of the Niassa Game Reserve in October and November. A manuscript ‘the Birds of the Niassa Game Reserve’ was completed and submitted to the ADU for publication. Bird-guide Training The feasibility of conducting training of Mozambican tourist guides to specialise in bird-watching in Mozambique was investigated. The course run by BirdLife SA at Wakkerstroom was observed and some of the course material was adapted for presentation in Mozambique. Preparations for a course based on the Wakkerstroom course to be run by Andre Botha in Mozambique during April 2004 were made. The plan was abandoned because confirmation of sponsorship could not be obtained in time to make the necessary arrangements. Roberts VII bird maps Bird atlas data from southern and central Mozambique was released to the Roberts VII project so that the distribution maps in new Robert's Birds of southern Africa will be as up to date as possible.
