What you can do
The rehabilitation centre for oiled seabirds in Cape Town, SANCCOB, urgently needs the help of volunteers for Operation Penguin Rescue. Volunteers over the age of 16, and who are prepared to work eight hour shifts per day for at least a week, may phone +27 (0) 21 480 7726 or 480 7729 or 480 7730 or 480 7749 between 8:00 and 19:00.

The estimated cost of Operation Penguin Rescue is R40 million. Any donation, large of small, is welcome. WWF South Africa, who is co-ordinating the fundraising drive on behalf of SANCCOB, has appealed to people to contribute generously. Crossed cheques can be forwarded to:

WWF Penguin Appeal,
WWF South Africa,
P O Box 456,
Stellenbosch 7599
or by direct bank transfer to: ABSA Bank in Stellenbosch, Branch code 334410, Account Number: 40-5178-1879.

If you find an oiled penguin, you can do one of the following:

  • put it in a ventilated box and take it to SANCCOB at Milnerton
  • take it to your local vet
  • take it to your nearest SPCA

(Please do not phone SANCCOB - they cannot handle all the incoming telephone calls.)
