Schuurman Metal Pressings, an engineering company in Cape Town, has produced flipper bands for the penguins. This tool was specially designed from scratch to bend the strips of stainless steel into the correct shape. |

The flipper bands are "tumbled" for at least 24 hours to remove the rough edges of the stainless steel. |

The first batch of flipper bands were fetched from Schuurman Metal Pressings within a week of the order being placed. The Avian Demography Unit's Mazda Wildlife Fund double cab bakkie has done several thousand kilometres already on Treasure-related business. It has transported people and equipment - but only one oiled penguin! |
