SANCCOB MEDIA RELEASEFor immediate release - 4 August 2000SAVE A PENGUIN SCHOOLS' CHALLENGE The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) has launched a Save A Penguin Schools' Challenge. The prize is a trip to Robben Island for the class that saves the most penguins. The number of children that came forward to help the penguins oiled in the Treasure spill has heartened SANCCOB. However SANCCOB's volunteer age policy of 16 years or older has meant many children have not been able to get physically involved. This is why SANCCOB has launched the Save A Penguin Schools' Challenge. To take part schools need to raise funds to rehabilitate the African Penguins oiled in the Treasure spill. It costs approximately R500 to rehabilitate one oiled African Penguin. Brackenfell High School has already raised R1000 - money to save two penguins. They challenge other schools to better this. SANCCOB will be working round the clock to rehabilitate the thousands of African Penguins oiled in the Treasure disaster until the middle of September at the earliest. Until then they desperately need volunteer and financial support to help them complete this massive rescue operation. The class that helps saves the most penguins will receive a guided trip to the Robben Island African Penguin colony. Robben Island Museum will host the trip, which includes the ferry ride and environmental tour of the island. To take part in the challenge please contact Natalie Hartley on (021) 790 0412 or email relief@iafrica.com The closing date for the Save A Penguin Schools' Challenge is 29 September.
