Listservers

As a service to the global research community, the Avian Demography Unit administers three ornithological listservers of international interest. These listservers reflect some of the research interests represented within the ADU: queleas, seabirds and waders. They are open to all interested subscribers, and the messages are not moderated. They help subscribers to gather and exchange information, and to keep in contact on a worldwide basis.

Quelea-L serves the small scientific community with a specialist interest in "Africa’s feathered locust", the Redbilled Quelea Quelea quelea. This listserver is administered by Dieter Oschadleus, the SAFRING ringing coordinator. Messages sent to quelea-L@lists.uct.ac.za are transmitted to all the subscribers.

Seabird. The seabird listserver is administered by John Cooper, Coordinator of the BirdLife International Seabird Conservation Programme. Messages sent to this listserver are transmitted to over 800 world-wide ornithologists with an interest in seabirds. The listserver carries much of interest for marine conservationists as well. Messages sent to seabird@uct.ac.za are transmitted to all the subscribers.

Waders-L. The Waders Listserver is administered by Les Underhill and Rene Navarro. This listserver is for everyone with a particular interest in waders (i.e. shorebirds, Charadrii). Messages sent to waders-L@uct.ac.za are transmitted to all the subscribers. To keep spammers at bay this list is "closed", ie. it only accepts postings from subscribers.

How to subscribe:

In order to "subscribe" (a misnomer, because it is free) to one of the listservers, send an email to majordomo@lists.uct.ac.za. There must be just one line in the body of the message, with the word susbcribe followed by the name of the list you wish to join and by your email address; e.g. the line

susbcribe quelea-L Joe@Bloggs.net

subscribes the address Joe@Bloggs.net to the Quelea Listserver. When you join, a full set of instructions is emailed to you. If your email programs is set to append a "signature" to your messages, then add a second line with the word end, this tells Majordomo to ignore any text that follows.

Alternatively, you might want to visit the following web site http://lists.uct.ac.za/cgi-bin/majordomo where you can manage your subscriptions to the various UCT lists, change options, unsubscribe, etc.
