Visiting Teachers |
|
Marine and Shipping Law has benefited greatly from visits of teachers from other universities from time to time. Recent and future visiting teachers at Shipping Law include: Stephen Girvin
PROF Stephen Girvin was Visiting Professor of Shipping Law for three months July to September 2001. He previously taught on the UCT Shipping Law Masters programme, and we are delighted to have formalised our association with Stephen, and through him with his home University at Nottingham. We can do no better than to point you to Prof Girvin's CV on the Nottingham website. Stephen taught the bulk of the LLM Carriage of Goods by Sea module in the second semester of 2001, and also convened and taught a Maritime Law option for LLB students. Professor Girvin was with the Shipping Law Unit for the second semester of 1996 and again in 2000. He comes to us from the University of Nottingham where he teaches Legal History, Carriage of Goods and Company Law. He participated in an intensive Carriage of Goods course during July 2000. Stephen graduated LLB at Natal before reading for a PhD at the University of Aberdeen, where he taught for two years before joining Nottingham. Prof Marc Huybrechts PROF Marc Huybrechts visited the Shipping Law Unit during 1997, and delivered a series of lectures on the liability of classification societies. Prof Huybrechts is a practising advocate in Antwerp, and a professor at Antwerp and Louvain. His visit to us has built a strong foundation for close future ties. Prof Hare was able to reciprocate with a visit to Prof Huybrechts in Antwerp - the city which hosted the CMI's Centennial Conference in June 1997. Professor Huybrechts is organising an international conference on marine insurance in Antwerp in November 1999. Prof Eric Japikse
WE have again welcomed Prof Eric Japikse to the Shipping Law Unit. Eric recently has retired from teaching maritime law at Leiden, but remains a consultant at Nauta van Haersolte in Rotterdam. We hope to persuade Eric to take part in our teaching programmes in the future, especially now that his term as an Exco member of the CMI has ended. Mr Nigel Meeson Nigel Meeson is the author of Admiralty Jurisdiction and Practice which has become the standard work on the subject in the U.K. We were most fortunate in receiving a visit from Nigel in April 1999 during which he gave the 1999 Admiralty Distinguished Visitor Lecture to our LL.M class. Nigel then went on to address the annual general meeting of the SA MLA. Nigel practises at the Bar from Admiralty Chambers in London. Prof Michael Sturley Michael Sturley, from the University of Texas, accepted our invitation to deliver our annual Marine Insurance Distinguished Visitor Lecture in early August 1999. Michael is closely involved in current moves to review legislation on marine insurance in the U.S.A. and has been involved also in the CMI's drive towards a new transport convention. Michael spoke to us on his proposal for a Restatement of the USA law of marine insurance, and also on the complexities of the draft USA COGSA. He visted Cape Town with his wife Michelle who is an expert in criminal law, and with the two small Sturleys. Fortunately the winter weather was kind to them. |
