ADMIRALTY ACROSS THE ATLANTIC

In the first semester of 2003 the Maritime Law Center at Tulane Law School in New Orleans and UCT Shipping Law joined across the wire for a video-conferenced course module of 20 hours' joint teaching. The classes were beamed together from the Oliver Tambo Moot Court at UCT and the Tulane conferencing unit. Teaching was shared by Prof Martin Davies from Tulane and Prof John Hare from UCT. Prof Stephen Girvin of NUS gave a guest presentation.

Linking up with the Maritime Law Center at Tulane Law School in the US for a 20-module video-conferenced course on admiralty court practice in SA and the United States.

The focus of the course was on the similarities and differences in admiralty court practice in the USA and SA. The students were encouraged to join in the sessions, and early indications were that this unique Transatlantic initiative was a great learning experience. The sessions ended on April 10 with an admiralty debate among the students.

Interestingly, no fewer than 12 countries were represented among the participating students in Cape Town. We believe this to be a world first!
