Director of the UCT Opera School

Professor Angelo Gobbato was born in Milan, Italy and emigrated with his parents to South Africa in 1950. He graduated from UCT with a BSc (Honours) in 1963, but completed his musical studies in voice and pianoforte with Carlo Tagliabue in Milan. He made his debut in 1964, appearing as opera, oratorio and lieder singer throughout South Africa. In 1966 he began directing operas and in 1976 was appointed Resident Director of CAPAB Opera. In 1982 he was appointed Director of Operatic Studies at the UCT Opera School, and in 1988 became Artistic Director of CAPAB Opera. He is currently Director of the UCT Opera School and CEO of Cape Town Opera.

Angelo Gobbato received the first Nederburg Prize for Opera in 1971 for his role as 'Papageno'. He received the prize again in 1981 and 1994 for his productions of La Forza del Destino and Turandot respectively. Other awards include the order of Cavaliere nell'Ordine del Merito alla Repubblica Italiana from the Italian Government, and from the Arts and Culture Department of the Western Cape Government for his work in developing the vocal arts in the region.
