South African Outlook has a
long and proud history. It provided incisive
commentary from a largely Christian, ecumenical
perspective on important issues and debates,
publishing informative, critical articles on the
massive removal and relocation of people under
apartheid, on land and poverty, on detention and
torture, and on the activities of apartheid
agencies beyond South Africas borders. At
crucial times over the past thirty years, it
provided an important source of information and
debate for a great many people inside and outside
the country.
But Outlook
became moribund. Between 1996 and 1998 no issues
were published. Many people were concerned about
the loss of such an important ecumenical
instrument, particularly since no magazine
currently exists to address Christians in public
and political leadership positions, in
professions, and in organs of civil society.
Outlooks
board decided that South African Outlook
should be relaunched, focussing on providing
informative, constructive and critical ecumenical
comment. In January, 1999, the first issue of The
New South African Outlook appeared, being
officially launched at the Multi-Event 1999--an
international conference concerning Christianity,
cultural values and public life. The magazine
sees itself as placed between a popular Christian
publication such as Challenge and a
formal Journal such as The Journal of
Theology for Southern Africa.
If
you are looking for probing analysis and comment
from an open, ecumenical Christian point of view,
for accessible, appealing and informative takes
on public life in a readily available and usable
form, we invite you to join us in this relaunch.
