In the preparatory stage, questions of language and concepts were raised by an assembly of academics, while grass-roots and community-based organisations met to formulate strategies for voicing themselves at the main conference, which took place in February 1999. That main conference involved religious and political leaders, leaders of civil and community based organisations, and academics. Proceedings of the conferences are now available. The ME99 process continues with the dissemination of the conference materials and perspectives, including a series of workshops co-sponsored by the Centre for the Study of Religion at UCT and the World Conference on Religion and Peace at the Parliament of the World's Religions in Cape Town in December 1999. The overall process addresses three interrelated areas: The task of constituting a civil public, the work of forming the cultural bases of a civil public, and the responsibility for shaping public policy. It emphasises religious experiences, phenomena and institutions to provide particular perspectives upon the transformation of public life and the making of public policy. But it has also included the participation of politicians and policy makers as well, as a crucial component of the debate. This is reflected in the programme of the Parliament of World Religions workshops. Organisation and events Documents
