\qj\nowidctlpar\adjustright {\fs23\cgrid0 In the 113 years of its history in South Africa The Salvation Army has been part of the fabric of society. It h as both by example and precept endeavoured to make a positive contribution to the development of a society that reflects the Kingdom of God as outlined in scriptures of the Old and New Testament. \par }\pard \nowidctlpar\adjustright {\fs23\cgrid0 \par }\pard \qj\nowidctlpar\adjustright {\fs23\cgrid0 The Salvation Army internationally has, by policy, generall y refrained from political involvement but has, where deemed appropriate, been willing to condemn practices which are morally and socially unacceptable. Still, for many years, The Salvation Army in South Africa remained silent about the growing evils of a partheid. It was only in November 1986 that General E Burrows, international leader of The Salvation Army issued a statement clearly condemning apartheid. \par }\pard \nowidctlpar\adjustright {\fs23\cgrid0 \par }\pard \qj\nowidctlpar\adjustright {\fs23\cgrid0 The Salvation Army in 1995 initiated a territory\_wide process of reconciliation including a pledge ca rd with signatures publicly presented to the General and a memorial plaque erected in Soweto. We recognise the immense value of being able to share one's story in public, with emphasis on God's way with us. Both these aspects of Salvation Army meetings can be utilised in exploring the truth of the past and building the reconciliation process.
