It has a congregation of about 1500 people. It is evangelical in its theological persuasion and congregational in its system of government. \par \par This submission is make on behalf of the Church by the Church Council, which is democratically elected. As a Council we are conscious of our responsibility to lead the people, and to take our stand on the critical issues of our time. \par \par Rosebank Union Church is deeply grateful to God for the statutory removal of apartheid and [transition] into a democracy. We recognise, however, that the effects of apartheid are not fully reversed. The process of reconciliation, which presupposes genuine repentance and the rebuilding of our nation will be long, demanding and painful. We acknowledge the [vital] role which the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is playing and it is our desire [to be] part of this process which underlies this submission. \par \par During the years of apartheid members of our congregation confronted the evils of injustice [sought] to play a constructive role in ministering to those who were suffering. On sever al [occasions] this Church condemned the wrongs of apartheid, and addressed the relevant . . .on aspects of legislation and practice that we believed to be in conflict with [Christian] teaching. \par \par }{\b [We] acknowledge with sadness our sins of omission}{. In retro spect we confess as a church that [we] did not do enough. We did not sufficiently challenge the legitimacy of unjust . . .and sometimes hid behind our own structures. All too often we stopped short of . . .and costly action. \par \par }{\b [We confess] with shame that we unwittingly perpetuated forms of apartheid in our [individual] lives and our corporate structures.}{ As a pervasive system apartheid affected us [in] ways that are both obvious and subtle. We acknowledge that some of our decisions and practices mirrored the political }{\i status quo}{ in that they were motivated by paternalistic }{\b /pp1-2/}{ attitudes, and reflected the economic and racial disparity within our country. Finally, we acknowledge that our worst sins could be those of which we are barely conscious. Our . . .is, however, one of repentance even in respect of those sins which escape our [recognition]. \par \par . . .the Church Council on behalf of the Rosebank Union Church. \par }}
