Work Experience 1994-2000 Research Institute on Christianity in South Africa, University of Cape Town, South Africa.

Research Co-Ordinator

  • Responsible for the day-to-day operations of an institute doing dynamic research on the relation between religion and social change in South Africa.
  • Duties included liasing between directors and staff, calling meetings and distributing associated materials, producing the newsletter, compiling and drafting the Annual Report, overseeing collection, filing and processing of documents, representing RICSA at conferences, consulting with directors on new projects and reporting on ongoing projects, general office administration and supervision, overseeing of web-site development and publicity materials.
  • Was responsible for the researching and drafting of a report, commissioned by the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission. This was used to construct the chapter on faith communities for the TRC’s final, published report.
  • In 2000, I took up a research fellowship attached to RICSA. Current duties include cataloguing documents, facilitating publication of two volumes, Christianity and the Colonisation of South Africa and Christianity and the Modernisation of South Africa, drafting project plan for a third volume, and training qualified black researchers to take over the project.

University Teaching Assistant

  • Was involved in seminars on Trinity and Society (1994), under the direction of Profs. John de Gruchy and Charles Villa-Vicencio and Reformation and Contemporary Culture (1997), under the direction of Profs. De Gruchy and James Cochrane.
  • Duties included facilitation of seminar discussions, preparation of syllabus, grading weekly papers and examinations, consulting with students about course materials and essays.
  • Designed course in 1996 on Popular Christianity and Denominational Identity and co-led with Prof. John de Gruchy. Duties as above.

University Tutor

  • Participated in an innovative tutorial programme which combined the introduction of course material with empowering disadvantaged students.
  • Duties included preparation and delivery of tutorials, consultation with students about course materials, guidance in selection of essay topics, exam preparations, marking bi-weekly papers.
  • Was also part of a planning group, which met with academic support staff and worked with lecturers on the selection and preparation of course materials appropriate to first year students at the University of Cape Town. The tutorials were also geared at the development of reading, writing and analytical skills.
  1987-1989 Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship, University of Toronto.

Campus Minister

  • Developed a student ministry with a special emphasis on faith and learning issues at the Universities of Toronto, York (Glendon Campus) and Trent.
  • Responsibilities included training of Bible study group leaders, oversight of student activities and programme visioning and development, counselling, teaching and preaching at group events, fund raising and liasing with local churches.
  • Co-ordinated the Scarborough Campus Chaplains’ Association in 1988-89.
  • Was co-ordinator of Vision 1987 and 1988, working under Rev. Derk Pierik. Vision conferences were a series of conferences taking place across Southern Ontario Universities, involving students and staff. They were sponsored by the Christian Reformed Campus Chaplains Association, the Institute for Christian Studies, Ontario Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship and the Canadian Scientific and Christian Affiliation. Duties included involvement in planning, managing publicity and general administrative matters.
 
Other Relevant Experience 1999- Journal of Theology for Southern Africa.
  • Currently serve as assistant editor.
  • Duties include liasing with authors and referees, solicitation and editing of submissions, calling productions and facilitating the editorial process.

1999-2000 Parliament of the World’s Religions, South Africa Forum.

  • Served as event co-manager for a series of workshops designed to present issues in South Africa’s transition for people of faith based outside South Africa.
  • Duties included liasing with speakers and conference organisers, production of publicity material (web pages), briefing chairpersons, collecting materials and writing a report for The Journal of Theology for Southern Africa.

1998 International School of Cape Town.

  • Supervised the research of an American exchange student who was doing research into reconciliation and faith in South Africa.

1997-1998 Journal of Theology for Southern Africa.

  • Was co-responsible for editing, desktop publishing and proof-reading. Also designed advertisements for the Journal.

1989-1990 Institute for Christian Studies, Toronto.

  • Worked as student recruitment officer for a Christian graduate school.
  • Duties included correspondence with prospective students, representing ICS at various conferences, speaking at Christian Colleges and representing recruiting matters on ICS academic council.

1988-1989 Citizens for Public Justice, Toronto.

  • Worked on a volunteer basis for a Christian political advocacy organisation drafting publicity material relating to welfare reform and aimed at local churches.
