Welcome to the website of the Philosophy Department at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

In this vestibule to our website, you can find out about what philosophy is and why it is worth studying even if you do not want to become a (professional) philosopher.

Elsewhere on our website you can learn more about the Department, its people and its various activities.

Welcome to all first-year students. You can find an orientation sheet with some details about Philosophy courses here:

In Memoriam: Asha Barron

We mourn the tragic death, on 25 January, of Asha Barron. Asha was an undergraduate in the Department from 2007 until 2009. In 2010 she did Honours in Philosophy, for which she obtained a First Class Pass. At the time of her death she was a Masters student in Philosophy at St Andrews University in Scotland.

At a memorial event in Cape Town, Dr Greg Fried, her former supervisor, delivered a eulogy.
