Our Vision
"We are committed to promoting relational, quality care in Nursing and Midwifery"
The University of Cape
Town became, in 1937, one of the first two universities
in South Africa to have Nurses on Campus.
Located in the historic old building of Groote
Schuur Hospital on the slopes of Devils Peak,
Cape Town, the Division of Nursing and Midwifery has
been preparing nurses at under-graduate level to meet
the challenges of health care in South Africa since
1972. A pioneering shift in 1984 to health based curricula
with a whole person and family/community focus, addressed
the expressed need of health service providers for
nurses who are flexible agents of change.
Nurses and Midwives comprise the largest group of
health care providers in South Africa. We are committed
to facilitating the development of competent, caring
and autonomous professional nurses and midwives who
are capable of creative and critical thought. In striving
to redress the historic academic isolation of diploma
nursing education, the Division of Nursing and Midwifery
is committed to offering flexible, accessible education
to nurses and midwives in order to facilitate the
provision of appropriate health care for the peoples
of South Africa.
This is in keeping with UCT’s vision of being
a world class African university.
The Division of Nursing and Midwifery is one of five
divisions which together comprise the School of Health and
Rehabilitation Sciences in the Faculty
of Health Sciences at UCT.
The Division of Nursing and Midwifery offers only postgraduate programmes in Nursing and Midwifery.
