Research Activities

The Department of Medicine has a strong research ethic and pursues basic, clinical and epidemiological research on board front. We incorporate 10 major research units, including the Allergy Diagnostic & Clinical Research Unit, Albertina &Walter Sisulu Institute of Ageing in Africa, Centre of Excellence for Chronic Disease in Sub-Saharan Africa, Desmond Tutu HIV Research Centre, UCT/UCL Hatter Institute for Cardiology Research, UCT Leukaemia Unit, Lung Infection and Immunity Unit, UCT Lung Institute, MRC/UCT Liver Research Centre, MRC/UCT/UWC Research Unit for Traditional Medicines and the World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Drug Policy.

A Clinical Research Support (CRSU) has established under the auspices of the Departmental Research Unit and is chaired by Dr Motasim Badri, the Departmental Medical Statistician. The CRSU runs the Clinical Research Methods Course, a programme of weekly seminars that is aimed at assisting Senior Registrars, Consultants, and other researchers to initiate their own research projects and programmes
