A second opinion on the interpretation of liver biopsies is often very helpful, and not infrequently crucial to an understanding of your patient. Professor Hall is always happy to review liver histology for both clinicians and pathologists.Ask your pathologist to send the following:

  • Preferably 6 unstained, mounted slides – we will perform the necessary stains ourselves and will keep them in our archives for comparison with possible future biopsies.
  • or a portion of the block for processing. (We prefer to stain our own samples, rather than to review slides already prepared and stained elsewhere

Enclose a brief clinical summary, including details of all relevant clinical and laboratory and imaging information. Full details of ALL drug use and of alcohol consumption are essential. Liver histology is reviewed at a weekly combined meeting by both pathologists and clinicians. If you fax a copy of the summary to one of our clinical consultants at 021-4479670, we will be in a position to contribute to the interpretation at our weekly clinicopathological meeting.
