Support Groups

The South African Crohn's and Colitis Association was formed in 1982 by a small group of IBD patients with the support of the GIT clinic at Groote Schuur Hospital under the direction of Prof. John Wright. The first Chairman was Rene Koonin, a working mother, who was herself on TPN. She moved to Australia in 1984 and Roland Hudson-Bennett took over the reins as Chairman, a position he still holds.

The association keeps in touch with sister organizations throughout the world and disseminates any new developments through the medium of a newsletter, which is circulated to members twice a year. In addition, brochures are available to members on Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Meetings are held in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth from time to time. Enquiries are responded to telephonically, by fax, by E-mail and in writing. There is an annual membership fee of R15.00.
