SOILS, SEDIMENTS AND WATER
A study of the distribution of health-related elements in the different virgin and agricultural soil types in the area between Cape Town and Darling is being carried out. As a baseline for future pollution studies, the bioavailability of trace elements that could enter the animal and human food chains is being ascertained. The exchange of Zn and Pb between water and highly contaminated sediments in Zoar Vlei are being assessed. The distribution and hydrogeochemistry of fluoride-rich groundwaters in areas surrounding the Pilanesberg are under investigation.

INDUSTRIAL IMPACTS ON ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY
The effects of various coal-based industries on air, soil and water quality are being researched through studies of sulphur levels and acid sensitivity of soils, the effects of ash leachate on soil properties and groundwater quality and the land treatment of sludges. Factors affecting the success of rehabilitating mine spoil materials through establishing a canopy of vegetation are being studied.
