RESEARCH IN THE GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENT
The Geological Sciences Department at UCT draws its research strengths from historical expertise in geochemistry, strong analytical facilities, and the geologic wonderland of southern Africa. We have an academic staff of 11 spanning a broad range of specialties in the geological sciences. We have a strong cadre in igneous petrology and geochemistry, with foci in stable and radiogenic isotopes and the evolution of magmas. Other strengths include the evolution of southern Africa, with concentrations in early plate tectonics, stratigraphy, and marine sedimentology/geochemistry. Many members of the department run active field programs across South Africa and neighboring countries.
