I’ve been working with seabirds
since 1998 when I began at the Oceanographic Museum Prof. Eliezer de
Carvalho Rios. Here I worked on the rehabilitation of marine animals, mainly
oiled penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus). I completed my
BSc in Oceanography at Fundação Universidade Federal do Rio
Grande (FURG- Brazil) in 2003 and my MSc in Aquaculture at
the same Institution in 2006. My BSc thesis was on the ecology
of Neotropic cormorants and their relationship with the fishery
industry in southern Brazil. My Masters thesis was on seabird
parasites and included laboratory reproduction of the
parasite’s life cycle.
I’ve been awarded a Brazilian
government scholarship Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de
Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) to do my PhD at the Percy
FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology's Centre of
Excellence, supervised by Prof. Peter Ryan. I will be working
mainly on threatened seabirds, using stable isotope analysis of
their feathers and toenails to infer what the birds eat and
where they feed during their non-breeding period.
Thesis
Using stable isotopes as a tool
to understand the trophic relationships of seabirds off
southern Africa (Supervisors: Peter Ryan
and Ross
Wanless).
