Since the the age of eight Dominic
has been fascinated by birds and the natural environment and growing up in
Zululand meant many family trips were spent in game reserves around KZN as well
as twitching birds across the country. His interest in birds soon led to an
interest in other animals like mammals, frogs and reptiles and this resulted in
a number of trips to some of the less visited areas of southern Africa and this
interest was further reinforced by his experience working as a biodiversity
specialist. Dominic completed a BSc Hons in Environmental Science and then MSc
in Zoology hrough the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, where he
studied the suburban ecology of Wahlberg’s epauletted fruit bat. After a trip
aboard a scientific vessel as a seabird observer off Cape Agulhas he became
interested in seabirding and currently registered as a PhD student at the
FitzPatrick Institute focussing on the conservation of seabirds.
Thesis
