Aim

To treat and prevent chronic medical conditions using exercise as a therapeutic tool

 

Background

In 2006, the Chronic Diseases of Lifestyle Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council published data showing that chronic diseases of lifestyle account for 52% of deaths in the South African population. Examples of chronic diseases of lifestyle include cardiovascular disease (CVD), pulmonary disease, peripheral vascular disease (PVD), obesity, osteoporosis and diabetes mellitus.

 

The primary focus areas of this research group are:

  • Molecular and cellular aspects of obesity and diabetes

  • The rehabilitation of patients with chronic disease

  • Mechanism of action of exercise therapy in the treatment of chronic disease

  • Integrated models of the pathophysiology of chronic disease
