ESSM has been chosen as one
of four international sports medicine research units
from around the world to receive International Olympic
Committee funding for the next for years. The grant from
the IOC's Medical Commission will enable ESSM's Clinical
Sports Medicine research group, which investigates
injuries and medical conditions associated with sport
and exercise, to significantly expand this already
research area in the coming years. The aim of the
research will be to expand our research in the field of
injury prevention and the protection of athletes'
health.

The UCT/MRC
Research Unit for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine
(ESSM) was founded in 1989 by Prof. Tim Noakes and a
group of researchers from the University of Cape Town (UCT).
ESSM is located at the Sports Science Institute of South
Africa (SSISA), in Newlands, Cape Town and boasts
state-of-the-art equipment, extensive facilities and
internationally renowned research staff whose primary
functions are teaching and research. ESSM
offers post-graduate courses in Exercise Science,
Biokinetics, Sports Physiotherapy and Sports Medicine.
