The major in English offers students a choice of courses. In first-year, in semester one, all students take ELL1013F English Literary Studies I. The course introduces students to literary and rhetorical terms, to diverse kinds of critical writing and to basic issues in literary theory. Different literary genres from Southern Africa and elsewhere are explored and analysed. Students' writing skills are developed in tutorial classes. In the second semester, the compulsory course is ELL1016S, English Literary Studies II. This course aims to extend the skills of ELL113F. However, the study of language in literary studies will have, as its special focus, issues that arise in the South African context. The study of literature will include texts from southern Africa and other parts of the world. In addition, it is recommended that students take SLL103S, European Literary Influences - course information is available from the School of Languages and Literature. In second year, you may choose ELL2007F African Literature and Language Studies I, a course which explores a range of South African texts and topics in language studies. Another possibility is ELL2014F Shakespeare and Company, which will introduce you to major figures of British Literature from Chaucer to Milton, with special attention to Shakespeare.If you are interested in literature of the 19th Century, you may choose ELL2015S Romance to Realism, in the second semester..You may also register for ELL2010S African Literature and Language Studies II.
To major in English, you will need to complete either ELL2007F African Literature and Language Studies I or ELL2010S African Literature and Language Studies II. In third -year, in the first semester, all students do ELL3005F Modernism, which includes major writers such as T S Eliot, James Joyce, Virginia Woolf and Ernest Hemingway. In the second semester, ELL3008S Postmodernism, which includes postmodern film, novels and theories, is offered.
All students, registering for the first time in 2011, and majoring in English, take at least one of the following courses:
