UCT School of Education

Information for prospective teachers wanting to start studying at university

To train as a school teacher at UCT, students complete a Bachelor's degree (3 or 4 years’ study) followed by the one-year, full-time only, PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) in Intermediate and Senior phases (Grades 4 to 9), or Senior phase and Further Education (Grades 7 to 12), or Further Education (Grades 10 to 12). Please download our leaflet Thinking of teaching? (PDF) for full details.

UCT does not have a BEd degree and does not at present train Foundation phase (Grades R - 3) teachers. It is, however, hoped that we will be able to offer a Foundation Phase PGCE from 2014, which means that it will be available to students who complete their degree by 2013.

(Note that a revised qualification with the same purposes, the Advanced Diploma in Teaching, will replace the PGCE, it is anticipated, by 2015.)

Consult the Funza Lushaka bursaries page for information about bursaries for prospective teachers.
