Variable Speed Synchronous Motor Drive
Description:
Providing it is rotating at more than 15% of its rated speed a
synchronous-machine will produce sufficient voltage to allow normal Thyristors
to be used in the Inverter of a D.C. Link Variable Speed Drive thus providing
an economic solutions for large drives. It is essential that the Inverter
Thyristors control be related to the magnetic field position by means of a
position encoder.
This project was started in 1998 [SGM03:Synchronous Motor; R Kumalo. The
project was not completed due to:-
a)Mechanical problems with the shaft encoders.
b)Thyristor Firing Circuits.
Deliverables:
The Shaft Encoder must be redesigned and new firing circuits will be
provided. The drive is then to be completed and tested.
Skills:
Drives synchronous machines, power electronics
